Welcome to my website: I am Dr Michelle H Craig, a specialist in book history and eighteen-century libraries. I am based at the University of Glasgow, where I hold the post of Lecturer in Information Studies, having previously been Principal Library Assistant (Rare Books Cataloguer); Tutor in Classics, History and Information Studies; Examinations Invigilator for Glasgow University Registry; and Affiliate TutorĀ in External Relations. I have also worked as a surveyor for the Friends of Glasgow Necropolis. Beyond that my background has been in archives and libraries. Much of my research centres on Glasgow libraries and especially the library of William Hunter (1718-1783). Hunter was a physician from East Kilbride who made his career in London, but donated his vast collections to the University of Glasgow.
My research interests are primarily late medieval and early modern book and library history, including:
- History of the book trade, particularly auctioneering and the second-hand circulation of books
- Eighteenth-century intellectual and cultural history
- The Enlightenment, Scottish and International
- Histories of collecting
- The materiality of books: book bindings, annotations, provenance marks, and copy specifics
- The development, use and purpose of early modern libraries and museums
I am also interested in the practical book conservation and:
- Rare book cataloguing, metadata, policies, and handling procedures
- Digital methods of storing, using, displaying, and exhibiting books and archival materials
I am able to offer services in transcription & Latin translation
